Using Task Recorder on Windows Server 2016

With the latest modern server technologies, a number of beneficial functions have been added. Unfortunately, Microsoft sometimes decides to go in a different direction. An example of this would be the changes on the Windows Server 2016 platform, where you can no longer use the Task Recorder, because Windows Media Player is not installed.

The problematic side of this is simply that you can no longer address document issues you run into, or create training documentation for existing/new employees. Since this is a key function of Task Recorder, we decided to look into the issue further to try and find a solution.

After scouring the internet for quite some time, we found a German blog that talks about disabling the Media Playback feature on Windows Server 2016 using the built-in dism command line utility. What?! How can you disable a feature that doesn’t exist?

Well, let’s try it – so we reversed it, used the Enable-Feature instead, and it turned into the following two lines that must be run from an elevated command prompt on Windows Server 2016 (i.e., Run as administrator):

dism /online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:MediaPlayback /norestart
dism /online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:WindowsMediaPlayer /norestart

Once these two commands have been successfully executed, you can now open Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 and use the Task Recorder!

Voilà!
