The Importance of Data Migration, in Layman’s Terms

If you’re charged with deciding whether to spend big money on upgrading or implementing an ERP system, you probably care most about the business benefits and not the nitty gritty technical details. Instead, you’ll likely defer to the CIO or the person charged with making the project happen when it comes to the complex technology to make it all work.

The Crucial Component

I’m not in any way trying to diminish the importance of details such as mapping, data cleanup and dependency, validation, infrastructure or syncing correctly. But the main point that I think you care about, as the decision maker, is that a lot can go wrong when one piece of the puzzle is not quite right. Since you’re holding the reins, you need to be certain that everything goes smoothly because data migration is arguably the most crucial component of an upgrade or implementation.

What is Data Migration?

In layman’s terms, data migration means making sure all of your company’s existing data such as financials, human resources information and operations documentation is properly moved from your old recordkeeping system to your new ERP and exists just as you need it in your new system. It means not having wrong information or duplicates of pieces of data. It also means that all the data you need is there and is not missing. But a key component is that it’s necessary to go through your old data with a fine-toothed comb and finding what’s worthy of moving over, because data takes up space and space costs money.

The Team is Impactful

Your technical team will have a large role in the entire implementation process, and they’ll likely already be working closely with an ERP partner or consulting firm to ensure a smooth and successful deployment. It’s a long road to make an implementation happen and involves a lot of detail. As the data migration piece is cumbersome, often times it makes sense to bring in a third party that focuses only on that part of the implementation.

CuroGens will accompany you and your ERP partner and offers its decades of deep technical expertise specifically for the data migration process. We work side by side with your company and your ERP partner to ensure every last bit of data has been reviewed, mapped and moved over to your new system – so that your implementation team can focus on the larger picture of successful deployment.
