In a recent study conducted by IFS, “88 percent of respondents said they would be likely to use spreadsheets with 84 percent citing Microsoft Excel in situations where enterprise software usability was poor.” This study was from around 200 manufacturers comparing the connection between enterprise resource planning (ERP), field service management (FSM) and enterprise asset management (EAM) along with their readiness for digital transformation.

For these businesses aiming towards manufacturing growth and innovation there is an immense necessity for enterprise software that is not going to hinder their usability. When a business’s usability is hindered users will reach out to find different methods of obtaining information outside the system which leads to inconsistency in their data. According to a lot of these manufacturers ERP means “Excel Runs Production.”

Having an enterprise system that is clunky will hinder the growth process as well. According to IFS, at least 50% of the respondents claimed that their current software was difficult to utilize.

Another finding from the survey suggests that poor usability can affect personnel retention. Naturally, younger generations or digital natives are going to have a higher expectation of software usability. “Only 26% said they are ‘definitely’ or ‘somewhat likely’ to change jobs over poor software usability.” In the 36-45 year old category, 45 percent said they would ‘definitely’ or ‘somewhat likely’ change jobs. This leaves those aged 46 and older with a 33% chance of changing jobs due to poor software usability. If these skilled professionals walk out of the door, who knows what kind of talent, knowledge, connections and creativity a company could be losing.

ERP implementations and upgrades shouldn’t be painful. With the right tools and training — and ERP partner — your manufacturing business system will facilitate better workflow efficiencies and bottom-line profitability.
